“I object to anybody who refers to me as excellency” – RAUF AREGBESOLA

Recently, in Oduduwa hall of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, the Osun Governor- Rauf Aregbesola was honoured “for putting unprecedented zeal into governance”; thus resulting in extraordinary outcome to the advantage of the Osun people.

They conferred on him a Gold Award for Administrative Excellence.

That the award was the second in nine months was not quite striking as the attention drawn when Aregbesola was addressed as “your excellency” at the event.

“… We did not originate this form of government. I have never heard anybody in America call any governor ‘your excellency’…
“If that is not sufficiently convincing- in the Uk, where the Prime Minister is ‘Mr. Prime Minister’, it’s only the queen that gets majestic title ‘Your Majesty’…

“Where did we have your excellency this and your excellency that from. I want to object to anybody who refers to me as excellency. I am afraid that God will ask me: ‘where do you place Me (God) when they (people) call you excellency?’ And I mean this”.

To drive home his point, Governor Aregbesola wondered whether a student or a candidate in an examination could be graded before writing such examination. He posed this question to the obviously enthusiastic students of the OAU and other guests in attendance:
“Can you be rated any way; like having fail, fair, pass, etc before an examination? A thunderous “Noooo!!!” deafened the Oduduwa hall venue of the event; which was filled to the brim.

“So if you must really use the word ‘excellency’ for any public office holder, let it be after they have performed before using the word ‘excellency’ for them. And that is if they eventually deserve it.

And Aregbesola got a spontaneous standing ovation as he so submitted.

  1. Playing to the gallery, nigerian politicians are excellent at that. He raises a valid point though, even Obama is mostly Mr President. We’re a title loving nation, and that reflects in every sphere, you call your childhood friend who has a child by her name and she tells you “if you can’t call me Mrs X or Mama bomboy fogerrit”
As for their achievements, a few kilometres of roads, 20 boreholes, two or three health centres are enough for them to earn the “your excellency” title, trust me.

Good politician. Though he seeks attention by playing to the gallery, he raises, and thus brings to the fore, serious concerns for our underperforming “excellencies” who have highly bloated egos of themselves.

  3. What is the benchmark for calculating ones achievement I think being called an excellency or not doesn’t disturb one from doing well or doing bad and why should he compare Nigeria with America and UK most of the politicians are called excellency and all other sort of name because of the respect of the office they old #itsoundsmeanignlessbutitmythoughts

He is a bit more consistent than we are giving him credit for. He has insisted on being known as ‘Ogbeni’ so this do not call me excellency is just an extension of that and not merely playing to the gallery as is supposed by some.
