My War Against Ugly Book Covers

Breaking news … I hate ugly book covers!
Another Breaking news …. People judge books by their covers!
Yet another breaking news … sexy book covers sell more books than ugly book covers!

As far as I can remember I have hated ugly book covers. I don’t care how great the book content is … if the cover looks poorly done, I just get an immediate turn off and no amount of viagra money can turn me back on.

It’s as if many authors or publishers don’t know how to design book covers or maybe they are intimidated by how hard it might be to design book covers or maybe they think it is expensive and that they require a special software or maybe they just don’t know to care.

Well I am here to tell you (if you are an author or publisher) that you should care because the quality of the book covers we as Africans and Nigerians produce says a lot about how seriously we take our book industry and how seriously the world will take our industry. And from the looks of things, from what I see in bookstores and online on okadabooks we have not been taking things seriously. And I am tired of seeing ugly book covers, so here is what I am going to do …

If enough people are interested …

I will share on this blog and for free, how anyone (and I mean anyone) can design quality book covers using a very sophisticated and complicated simple software … Microsoft word! But only if at least 20 people say, yes yes yes to me writing a sexy post on designing sexy book covers in the comment box below … check out some of the covers I designed using just microsoft word and a couple of other simple tricks.

    Hat ugly book covers!

  2. Yes Yes Yes ooooo! Ofili! I want to learn o! I’ve even downloaded lots of books on graphics and designs to help up my skills. Tired of always looking for a graphic artist to design evry liitle thing/idea I have. *Waiting*… Thanks in advance! *wink*

  3. Yes ke! That Ila’s garden cover is the sexiest I’ve seen in a long time. A work of art really. By the way, methinks you write more when you’re in Nigeria. Does the inaction of NEPA spark your creativity?

Shall I be the fly in this ointment of ‘YES’ comments and say some of the book covers considered ugly, especially those of older, classic Naija books like Eze Goes To School, Bottled Leopard, Scoundrels in Uniform, etc, could be considered a form of rare, vintage Naija art work?

It could be the ‘beauty in the eye of the beholder’ syndrome, or it could just be nostalgia, but I wouldn’t mind framing some of those ugly book covers as an ode to memories past. What thinkest thou?

Still, you have a resounding YES to this cause of better covers from me, cheers!
