Stop Growing Your Business

This post has been seen 1270 times.

Growth is the magic word every business aspires to.

If you are not growing you are failing
If you are not adding more customers
or buying another business
or going public, your business is as good as dead…so they say

Thus the media asks…
How is your business growing?
How many customers did you add?
Have you increased your profits this year?

And businesses try to answer,
They answer by adding more staff and then laying them off
Buying more buildings and then foreclosing on them
Borrowing more money and then filing for bankruptcy

And why? Because they are focused on “growth”
When instead they should be focused on improving quality
And ensuring that their quality does not get diluted with growth.
And being bold enough to stop growing when quality has been compromised.

That’s what great businesses do!

  1. While I’m of the opinion that growth and development both pertain to a positive change or increase, the former is purely quantitative, while the latter is mostly qualitative. I think that business growth is practically to increase earnings, while to develop is to improve the corporate environment through pro-employee programs, social welfare initiatives, sustainable processes etc.

  2. I get your point but the topic is not just it. There is nothing wrong in “growing” your business. Growth and expansion are two different things. When you expand your business, you may do so at the expense of quality (which is bad). But there is no way in hell that you can grow your business without increasing the quality. Growth is always positive. Growth is not limited to expansion.

“How big do you want this to be?”
It is a question that is most likely to get in the way of,
“How good do you want this to be?”
