The Scavengers: Lagos Most Misunderstood Heroes #1

This post has been seen 4399 times.

So I will be starting a sketch series called The Avengers Scavengers: Lagos Most Misunderstood Heroes.

It will be a collection of Lagos officers turned super heroes or super villains depending on how you want to view them. The term scavengers although demeaning is to show the reality of the situation for most of our street officers … low pay, low incentive to work and even lower incentive to be honest … so they end up having to hustle we the people to make ends meet or to live that Nigerian dream.

But in the midst of the craziness there are some hero officers out there making shit happen in Nigeria/Lagos despite the circumstances. Like that LASTMA officer I see at the corner of Golden Gate … from morning to night … he is there not jostling for bribe but actually working even when it rains, he is there. Or that LASTMA officer that stops cars at Awolowo road so that children can pass by safely.

At the end of the day some are heroes … some are scavengers … but all of them are mostly misunderstood.

  1. Ofili, this is the reason why I like reading your blog. You take a situation/issue where the negatives are emphasized and try to advocate for the good within that system. An alternative perspective is always needed to provide balance. I look forward to this series.

It is a lot more work to post original stuff, especially when your content isn’t entertainment or gossip based. But your words are yours, and you are adding great value to the community of ideas. I won’t lie, seeing you write original posts actually encouraged me when I finally decided to start blogging, especially since I didn’t want to go the popular route.

      Thanks Ofili.

Ofili, your articles crack me up time after time after time! So much that I look crazy to everyone around so I decided that I would only read your articles when I’m at home! I think what I find most amusing are the comical / graphic sketches. Thank you for blessing us all with your gift.
I remember when my late dad (Goddy Abangwu )brought home a copy of your first book after you launched at lawn tennis section of Lagos country club…. aha. I do know you quite well cause I also grew up as a lawn tennis kid in that same generation as you did and yes, our parents are friends. They call your dad OFILIIIII! Lol! Good one bro! So proud of what you have become.
