Can Your Blog Handle The Mobile Explosion
This post has been seen 5630 times.
Just last week, Facebook revealed that half of its 850 million users log in through mobile devices. Not really big news, except when you factor in the fact that facebook makes majority of its revenue through adverts and then juxtapose it with the fact that facebook does not run any mobile adverts! Then you realize that that is a stagerring 400+ million users that are not being harvested for revenue. A revenue loss of close to 50%!
So what does this have to do with people like you and me? To be precise…a lot! When I started out blogging in 2006, there was no ipad or android devices in existence. But today there has been a mobile explosion. People now more than ever are accessing the internet through their phones versus their home computers or laptops. What does this mean for you? It means that if your site is not optimized for mobile viewing…you could be losing a large number of traffic or revenue (if you run adverts) because you are not connecting with people on mobile devices. Fortunately, there are 2 quick and simple things that you can do right now:
Step #1 Test: Instead of viewing your site from your computer alone, view it from other mobile devices (and not just the cellphone you own). Pick up a blackberry, an android phone, an ipad, an iphone, a windows phone or anything else you can find. Check the loading speed of your website on all those devices, check important links, check the aesthetic presentation. If you like what you see…then carry on with you merry life. If you hate what you see then progress to the next step.
Step #2 Fix: A lot of solutions are already out there. For example wordpress has a free Mobile Pack that allows your website automatically switch to a mobile theme when accessed from a mobile device. Onswipe is another free solution that is designed specifically for ipad viewing, it optimizes any website for mobile viewing on an Ipad and is pretty beautiful. If you are not sure of what to do all you have to do is search or talk to your web designer to ensure that your website is optimized for mobile viewing. But fix it!
Now I can’t predict the future. But I do believe that as mobile devices become more and more efficient, they are going to quickly become the primary way of accessing the internet. Businesses that recognize this early on and optimize their websites for easy mobile access will ensure that their online business presence remains unperturbed by the inevitable mobile exploision that is going to occur so that they do not lose out on 50% via an untapped market as facebook just did.
