Bucket Economics

Bucket Economics.

Take a bucket of water and give it to a man who has no water but desperately needs to get ready for work. And just watch him brush, shit, piss and bath with that one bucket and yet still have water left over to quench his thirst. That’s bucket economics!

But imagine if you gave that same man 2 buckets of water. Based on the logic above, he should have one bucket left.

But that’s not what happens, instead he like many of us will use up the 2 buckets. And if you take the buckets away and give him a shower … the man will easily shower 4 plus buckets of water away! That’s Shower economics.

Rich people practice bucket economics while the poor practice Shower economics.

The latter the poor takes the little money they have and turns on the shower .. they are showering at weddings, showering at strip clubs, showering at parties, popping bottles … until one day the shower runs dry and they are broke.

But the former, the rich people. They bath with buckets … they spend on a budget.

They know exactly where each dollar/naira is going and are able to brush, shit, piss and bath on a budget. You don’t see them flashing their money across town, they are quiet.

But they are rich and they are calculated, because they run on Bucket Economics. Practice your bucket Economics today.

  1. The bucket economics story is nothing but the truth. I love the fact that its short, simple and straight forward.
Deep lessons embedded in a short illustration. The world deserves to see this. Good one, Ofili.

  2. when you get a lil extra, u wanna buy up all u can or enjoy as much as u can because u don’t know when u would have that kinda money again, chai it’s well….. bucket economics, na the way forward oooooh!!

  3. True words Ofili!

But it has to get to a point where the rich will also have to “shower” effectively. They have to enjoy the wealth. They worked for it. Its life.

The question is then, how to decide when it is appropriate to transition…

  4. Spot on! This is what the development community tries to grapple with when dealing with poor economics under the agenda of eradicating poverty. The poor man does not understand the philosophy of economics.
